Message and on wannabe street cars. On a race car, you're often inspecting the motor thoroughly between events, and the minor gain in performance outweighs the increased maintenance. It's seen primarily on drag cars where you don't have a car in front of you kicking up dust and the track is kept pretty clean.
People that do trackdays/HDPE usually don't because there's always someone in front of you kicking up rocks/dust or going off the track and you really don't want the engine ingesting that stuff. On NA cars it's important to still have a screen in front of the throttle bodies so you don't accidentally get a rock jammed in the throttle keeping it open.
