Message ...a seal around it to keep the fluid inside. That input shaft has a gear at the other end that mates with the gear that drives the axles. This is what accomplishes the motion to be transferred 90 degrees from the drive shaft to drive the axles.
The input shaft has a bearing on one end, and the sleeve on the shaft that is adjusted by torquing the nut to preload the force between the gears.
Here's a look at it from the manual CLICK for DIF Propeller Shaft and Differential Assembly section, page 14. You will see the dif is a fairly complex assembly.
There's more to it than that to properly set up the alignment of the 2 gears, and that's usually best left up to someone who has experience at it otherwise you will get anything from an annoying whine that will stay like that forever, to failure of the dif.
A couple years ago I had a new seal put in the diff of my Z-28 and went on a trip. Made it about 200 miles and the rear end completely went south on me, requiring flat deck home.
I am not trying to depress you, but it might be safer and cheaper to have a specialist look at it before the gears wear improperly and and need replacing rather than proper alignment

Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.
