Message Antenna Motor/Mast Replacement on 90+ 300ZX

This procedure was recorded using a 1993 300ZX 2+2. Some items may differ between other models and years. Although the steps below require no special tools or knowledge, good general maintenance skills and judgement are necessary to avoid personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle.

This procedure details the removal and replacement of the antenna mast and the antenna motor assembly. If the antenna mast fails to extend or retract, but the motor works correctly, removal of the antenna motor assembly is NOT necessary. If the antenna motor does not function properly, follow the procedures below, skipping the portion detailing the removal of the antenna mast.

TOOLS

10mm ratchet with extension, pliers, Phillips screwdriver, two small flat tip screwdrivers, grease, work light.

PROCEDURES

Interior Removal

1. Lift the rear carpet and remove T-top hold down straps from the body mounting point.
2. Remove the front rear and pressboard cargo mat supports.
3. Remove the spare tire.
4. Remove the center rear interior panel. Two finger screws at the top and two nuts at the bottom.
5. Remove the ABS actuator cover. Three screws at the bottom and two clips at the top (Fig. 1)

6. Remove spare tire tool kit.
7. Remove the cargo lamp. After removing the lens cover, pass the cargo lamp through the opening so it is not damaged when removing the interior panel.
8. Remove the right rear interior panel. Three screws at the bottom, one screw near brake light.

Antenna Mast Removal

9. Remove the antenna base nut and antenna base (Fig. 2, 3)

10. Remove the antenna nut and washer (Fig. 4). There are two small slots in the top of the nut. Try using two small flat tip screwdrivers to engage the slots and turn the nut. Otherwise, use needle nose pliers. If the nut is damaged during removal, order a new one, as the nut is not provided with the new antenna mast.

11. Remove the antenna mast. Turn on the radio, and while the antenna mast is raising, grasp the bottom portion of the mast and pull upward. The antenna mast and entire antenna rope, the thin white plastic toothed part, should have come out. If it did not, the antenna motor assembly will have to be removed from the vehicle so that the remaining piece of antenna rope can be retrieved. Save the thin metal tube around the antenna mast as this is not supplied with the new mast.

Antenna Motor Assembly Removal and Installation

12. Remove the antenna motor assembly. Remove the two antenna screws (Fig. 4), two chassis screws (Fig. 5), and compress the chassis clip. Disconnect the signal jack and power jack. From below the car, just to the right of the muffler, push the drainage tube body nipple through the body opening. The antenna motor assembly can now be removed.

13. Remove the cover nut to gain access to the spool that coils and houses the antenna rope (Fig. 6). Gently work the cover around to get inside and remove the spool. Note the location and orientation of the dished washer. You will then be able to remove any remaining pieces of the antenna rope. Reassemble the spool, washer, cover, and cover nut, ensuring the cover o-ring is properly positioned. If necessary, remove the stalk screw to remove the antenna stalk.

14. Install the antenna motor assembly. Note: lightly grease the body nipple to facilitate installation. Squeeze the entire body nipple through the body opening then properly position it by gently pushing it in place from the underside of the vehicle. Replace the four screws and two jack connections from Step 12 above.

Antenna Mast Installation

15. Install the antenna mast (Fig. 7). Collapse the antenna mast to extend the antenna rope and lightly grease the antenna rope. Turn on the radio and wait for the motor to stop turning. Keeping the antenna mast collapsed, feed the antenna rope into the antenna stalk with the teeth facing toward the centerline of the car. Have an assistant turn off the radio to activate the antenna motor and gently guide the antenna rope and antenna mast as it is pulled into the antenna stalk. The antenna motor should automatically stop at the proper time. Slide the thin metal tube, saved from Step 11, down around the antenna mast until it is flush with the antenna stalk.

16. Install the antenna nut and washer.
17. Install the antenna base.

Interior Installation

18. Install the right rear interior panel and cargo lamp.
19. Install the spare tire tool kit.
20. Install the ABS actuator cover.
21. Install the center rear interior panel.
22. Install the spare tire.
23. Install the front rear and pressboard cargo mat supports.
24. Install T-top hold down straps and rear carpet.
