I am replacing the gas filler neck on my 1993 TT 2+0 due to extensive rusting. I bought a new one on ebay and realized it must be an older version of the filler neck (17221-30P00 vs 17221-30P05) because the one I purchased doesn't have the same plastic flapper on the end like the one I removed. Unfortunately, the filler neck end is different (there's an extra flange for the flap to clip onto), so I can't simply install the flap on the replacement neck. My question is, do I need this flapper? What does it do? I'd like to run the replacement I have on hand, but I'd also like to avoid fuel sloshing up the filler neck or any other problems. Thanks in advance. Example photo without flap: Example photo with flap:
