Had an R-12 system too (miss it very much, but the TT conversion demanded a sacrifice) I used ester oil and flushed the compressor thoroughly. Also would recommend R-152 instead of R-134. It cools slightly better at idle than R-134. It's also much better environmentally than r-134. You can vent it to atmosphere, if need be, and was recently approved as a refrigerant for cars. It's what they use in the canned spray air. I actually used Dust-Off with a can tap to fill mine (With AC manifolds, of course). Either way, neither option will be better than sweet sweet r-12.
