or adjusting needed. They receive voltage and current from the Battery when activated with ignition and clutch depressed. There is a relay in the system that has a switch that does go bad over the years and causes start issues. There is also a safety switch on the clutch pedal that needs to be depressed to start, reason clutch needs to be floored. There probably are other systems in the start circuit for a successful start Since you get juice to the starter and it activates the electric system is working to energize the starter. The starter could have a problem with the Bendix unit that engages the flywheel. It is spring loaded and engages with voltage. If a troublesome Bendix it could be weak and slightly disengage during operation causing the grinding? The flywheel could have some damaged teeth? To determine you need to jack up the car up and use safety stands then disconnect the (-) batt cable, disconnect the electric at the starter, then remove the starter and inspect the Bendix teeth and have it tested at a shop. IME bench testing the starter is not always a positive test of OK or not good. Been there done that. Sometimes just came down to buying one (not happy with rebuilts or remans always went with new). Inspecting the flywheel teeth is more difficult since you need to rotate the flywheel thru 1 rev to inspect all teeth. Of course could have a shop do it but that is a wallet drain. Are you a DIYer? Good luck
