Especially since you mention it killed the car when turning the lights on. But the one thing that's holding me back is that you say you haven't had any issues like this before. So the fact that it just happened when you started trying to get the A/C back working makes me think it's something specific to that. That does sound like alternator whine in the radio. Can you check the voltage at the battery cables while the car is running, battery disconnected? Keep an eye on the voltage as you increase electrical load- maybe open all doors, then turn on parking lights, etc. but while the car is running. I think the voltage will drop. Also, do you have a power steering leak? There is a spot that can leak and get on the alternator, causing it to eventually fail.
