Had a similar problem with my 96NA, errant misfire I couldn't track down. I replaced and did all the same you listed, eventually I caved in and replaced the timing belt...and I had verified timing by taking the covers off, monitoring with ConZult, timing light etc. nothing was out of place apparently. Replacing my timing belt solved mine. For yours Im wondering if perhaps the keyway either on the crank or the timing belt pulley has stretched out allowing timing to rattle around under load or could be the belt also like mine. The compression being off im assuming equally 10 lower than the passenger side makes me think about timing again, perhaps the IVT sprocket is stuck throwing off the timing and affecting compression? Have you tried putting in an OE ECU to remove the possibility of a bad tune? Does he fuel up with quality gas? Was this concern present prior to the timing belt being replaced a few years ago as well?
