Nissan has changed the design of the rear main seal. It is now 1/2 the thickness of the OEM ones of the era, when the 300zx was released. There is an ongoing debate as to whether the seal should be installed bottomed out in the carrier or 1/2 down to keep it flush with the surface of the carrier, as the old OEM would have been. I have installed it both ways and saw no difference. I do want to stress this point, however; if the crank is grooved, it is safer to install the seal on a new rubbing surface. This is an opportunity not afforded to you if you were using the the OEM old style seal. Moral of the story, bottom it out.
