I once had a car in with a very similar issue. After checking about everything, I removed the oilcap by chance and noticed the intake camshaft wasn't moving and had seized !I was really surprised the engine would even run with a seized cam and you couldn't really tell something was wrong, it was still running on 6 cylinders (even with the coils disconnected on one bank), there just was a big lack of power. Probably the fuel just auto ignites..a bit like a diesel. the small pin that locks the cam sprocket into position had snapped, so the sprocket was just free-wheeling the camshaft. The timing belt didn't even jump a tooth
