Message Thanks for the reply. Not at all looking forward to an EGR valve R2 job, but at some point, it will be necessary. I had the 5-speed out in 1999, clutch job. Wish I'd done the EGR valve then as well. I recall getting a decent view of the EGR & it's plumbing. Think I'd rather drop the transmission than yank out the engine, if the access is adequate.
Did a simple diagnostic test yesterday, tested the EGR solenoid w/ 12 volts, solenoid is audible. All connecting vacuum hoses in the EGR system were replaced when I replaced all fuel injectors a few years ago, still pretty good.
Performed the vacuum ops check of the EGR valve @ idle. Idle quality dropped off, then the motor stalled. Basic ops check good.
Ignition timing is steady at 15. At that ignition timing value, my car has had consistently low NOx "measured".
I don't currently own the Conzult software, or the cable. Considering buying though.
Only 2,022 miles driven since last smog check in July, 2018, and then my NOx readings were well within limits. Seems weird to get out of limit readings both 15 mph / 25 mph tests, for NO, when the other parameters stayed low & close to my last test measurements, since I haven't put on much mileage since.
I'm starting to consider a re-test. I had no CEL, yet the test tech failed my gas cap. Prior to that, had told me "the car is passing, except for the cap". Then surprise, "your car failed for high NO(x)" !
Seems like I should've had a CEL illuminated for either the gas cap, or EGR. I noticed also, on a 100 degree day in Vacaville (July 31), no ventilation fan for the radiator, enclosed shop. I should've intervened, but my experience, the smog tech guys tend to assume drivers are know-nothings. Get annoyed with owner questions. Not all, but some do.
