Message coolant system initially, based off of your fill procedure. The engine's cooling system will intake more coolant as it runs, which will equal more fluid than just a single fill of the radiator. Consider purchasing a "spill-free" funnel for radiator work as it makes the process of filling and bleeding air simple.

-Step 1 is to completely BLOCK the overflow port of the radiator, and set aside the overflow hose.
-Install funnel into rad
-Fill radiator with coolant until coolant level is inside funnel
-Run the motor
-As the engine runs, continue to fill the radiator with coolant and keep the coolant at a reasonable level inside the funnel
-Eventually the radiator will stop taking on coolant. Watch the surface of the coolant in the funnel for bubbles
-Continue to let the car run as bubbles appear on the surface of the coolant in the funnel.
-You can rev the car slightly from the throttle and see as it causes more bubbles to appear
-Once most of the bubbles stop coming up with the car idling, you can insert the stopper into the funnel and remove the funnel containing overflowed coolant.
-Reinstall overflow hose
-Reinstall cap

Now as the system cools down, excess coolant will drain into the overflow. You should be able to open your cap once the engine completely cools and the level should still be completely full up to the cap.
