didn't hear you check for intake valve sealing. Your car has the sound of the same issue in each cylinder (ie. Rings, exhaust valves, intake valves). If you didn't check for the sealing capacity of the intake valves, you can do so by listening for air escaping by removing the balance tube. You can also try to determine the ring sealing by duplicating the compression test with a bit of oil in each cylinder as you check each one. If the compression goes up, it points to rings as your issue, oil would not increase compression (much) if the issue is valves. Also, are you burning oil, if so how much, when you floor the accelerator, do you get blue/whitish smoke out the exhaust? While the VG engine is indeed a PITA for most of us, a swap would entail more than installing an easy to work on engine. You'd have adaptors to accommodate the installation of the trans, different electronics to deal with, various components needing to be repositioned, a custom driveshaft to have made, etc., etc.
