indicator of fuel mixture. if the plugs are old it makes reading them a little tougher. If you are willing to do a little extra work, go buy a set of standard, non platinum or iridium plugs (to keep price down). Drive the car for about 25 miles miles and check the color (and smell for fuel, indicating a rich condition). If they are dark, and the color isn't oil, that indicates a rich condition. If they are white,grey, or real light colored, that indicates a lean condition. I'm sure there are other, more "recent" sensors and scanning tools to use, but if you run out of options, this is an old tried and true technique. In the "old, dark ages", this was how "we" tuned our carburetored cars at a race track. Good luck.
