Message after driving my Z whose teflon bushings were completely gone, the notchy feel of the brass bushings was a welcome change. IIRC, I tightened the locknut down, then backed it off maybe 1/4 turn or so. If too tight, yes, you'll have difficulty shifting, but I preferred what I take as positive engagement through the lever. Obviously, personal preference plays into this as well.

Either OEM or brass bushings, its still not the easiest area to work on.
