Given the following OEM spring rates:

TT Front: 168 lbs/in or 3.0 Kg/mm // TT Rear: 134 lbs/in or 2.4 Kg/mm

NA Front: 168 lbs/in or 3.0 Kg/mm // NA Rear: 123 lbs/in or 2.2 Kg/mm

Everyone keeps saying you need at least 7kg / 5kg to keep the car from bottoming out. But why would the car bottom out with less than 7.0 Kg on a coilover, when it doesn't with only 3.0 kg on stock springs?

A Front Coil Spring Rate of 7 kg/mm is 392 lbs/in; and a Rear Coil Spring Rate of 5 kg/mm is 280 lbs/in. Why would I need so much more spring in a coilover compared to the OEM springs?

Say for example, If my left front wheel supports 867 lbs and the spring is rated at say 200 lbs/in; wouldn't that give me approximately 4" of travel before bottoming out? What am I missing here?

Is it something to do w/ spring travel being that much shorter on a coilover?
