Message	perform poorly since the ECU would think timing was adjusted a certain way (and map for that) while in reality the leak may keep the VTC from adjusting. Not sure it's severe enough to damage the engine (knock) under boost? Others can chime in??? But if you've already got a things apart to see the leak what's the big deal in replacing the gears?
