Message I'm getting the tell tale signs of alternator failure (Brake, Lights, Battery, and Anti-Lock lights are all illuminated) but I'm confused.

I've checked Auto-FAQ and other old threads from BliZard indicating the possibility of bulb check relay. Additional symptoms are squeeling from the alternator and system voltage around 18!

Here are some questions to put me back on the right track... to my sanity.

  1. Can you please provide a picture of normal dash lights with ignition on before starting the engine?
  2. If my alternator is bad why is it pumping out 18V? What regulates the system voltage in a '95 TT? The alternator itself?
  3. What would Pep Boys etc. do to determine whether the alternator is bad?
  4. Would a bad alternator cause the battery to drain while the engine isn't running, i.e. electrical leak?
  5. Where should I get a replacement alternator?
  6. What color and/or type is the bulb check relay? Who else has had that be root cause?
