The other day I turned the key to start my Z and I heard the starter motor run w/o engaging the flywheel. Another attempt and.., VROOOM! the engine started. This happened again and then nothing. I measured the voltage at the trigger wire while turning the key (had my wife watch my DVM) and voila! ..12VDC. This told me the relay and clutch pedal switch were not the problem. Took the starter out, powered with a battery and it ran just fine. WTF? Here is the theory of the malfunction: The solenoid had worn out its contacts and while the current demand was modest (as in running w/o load), the starter ran; but under load, the solenoid was incapable of passing the 400 amps it needed to move the motor. Now the problem became the unavailability of the solenoid. Z1 nor CZP nor OEM sell it anymore. Finally found one on the internet for 48$.
