Anybody know why the holes for the water jacket ports across the top of the OEM head gasket are so small? Both the Cometic and Tomei head gaskets have larger holes, but they still don't match the size and shape of the openings in the block deck. Holes in the head gasket below cylinder bores are larger on aftermarket gaskets than OEM, but smaller than the ports in the block. At the front and back of the deck surface are 2 ports that don't even have holes in the head gasket. The only place that all gaskets match the ports is the lopsided teardrops between the lower row of head bolts. I imagine some holes were to allow knocking casting sand out of the water jacket. My question is, can I open these holes up on an OEM head gasket? Was the water flow restricted for any good purpose? Leaving out a thermostat will let water flow too fast to cool properly, is that it?
