Hi- I've a '90zx n/a a/t with a lot of problems. One of the problems is that 'ticking' noise you asked about. Crank your car, open the hood, face the engine, rev the car using the throttle cable on the right. Give the throttle several quick snaps and see if you hear a rapid 'buzzing' noise; like a mosquito or bee would make. Mine does this and it is the injectors making the 'buzzing' noise. I suspect that there is something wrong with the valve-train, CAS(crank angle sensor), timing belt etc. The early 90's models had many, many problems. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will just be a weak lifter or your hood support rod is loose in it's holder or the bushing is bad.
