Message	many miles, like 80K or higher, and then you switch to a true synthetic, there is some risk that the engine will begin to burn oil. This is because the petroleum-based oil does not prevent wear as well as a synthetic and it also gums up, gunks up and varnishes and sludges around the rings which provides a false seal while the rings wear. Over time, this will catch up with itself and the engine will need to be repaired sooner. True synthetic oils have tremendous detergent properties and will clean off that gum, gunk, varnish, and sludge from around the rings over time, and that is why the engine starts to burn oil after switching to synthetic on a high-mileage engine. The weakness is caused by the petroleum-based oil.
