Thank you everyone for the replies. I would like to pull the alternator and play with cleaning it more but time is always a factor and I hate spending time on something that doesn't produce any results - or am just lazy and the alternator is not that fun to swap out.
I am going to order a replacement alternator but I will at least look at the pulled alternator and see what I can see as far as damage and maybe take it to AutoZone and have them test it. I might get lucky and get one of the older guys who has some good knowledge and who can tell if it is a diode problem or some shorting.
