Last time I succeeded I was doing a 740 install at the same time and it wasn't too much of a hassle, but I've worked on a lot of these. I also have a 13mm open end that I've cut in half to make it easier to turn the bolts, but that only works if they're loose and spin pretty freely.
Unbolting the rear trans mount and lifting will definitely give you some more space. Give that a try.
