I actually had to give up on the last set that I tried to pull. Really the best time to do downpipes is when the trans is out or the plenum is off. With the trans out you can rock the motor forward to give more clearance to the firewall. With the plenum off you have better access to the top of it and don't have to do everything from the bottom. I pull the shields off the brake and fuel lines when doing the driver's side. TBH it's probably worth pulling the trans. It's not actually that hard and can give you a good bit more space.
The scary thing is when one of the bolts starts feeling like it's starting to bind.
