since you don't have the history. The OEM filters are relatively cheap (~$15). This will eliminate one component and if it is the original it's time for replacement anyway. Next I would jumper arournd the regulator with high pressure fuel hose to take the regulator out of the equation. Maybe one of the experts will jump in as I assume this is a safe temporary test and will not damage any components (ie I don't have a lot of fuel system troubleshooting experience). At this point it is a matter of simple elimination. You might want to do a forum search for your issue and see if someone has already posted about it. I imagine you are not the only one that has had this experience.
