Message such as cutting the injector mid pulse.

But 'smart' (We will call them) rev limiters, such as those built into cars ECU's, cut individual cylinder pulses before the injector is fired. Air goes in, spark does nothing, air goes out.

And what doesn't come out, flames in your exhaust.

Technically the safest way would be to cut fuel and spark to a cylinder to prevent any possible detonation.
