Depending on the depth and ability of the seal to maintain seated within the groove. A new seal will ride higher because it has more material in the groove potentially providing extra clearance for oil to get out. I have two grooves because the rear main has been replaced twice already? The two grooves are VERY close together. The closeness provides the opportunity for the seal to ride between the grooves with even more opportunity for leakage.
