Message ZIF is a Zero Insertion Force socket.. It allows the Chip to be placed in the socket, then you move a handle to clamp the legs tight..

Normally it's used in the Prom Programmer. Sometimes they can be rather large.. I found one that fits nicely in the 300 ECU board..

Its for when your changing chips a lot.. But they are only $10 for a ZIF.. a Normal Socket is about $2.. Depending upon Quality..
