solenoid. The solenoid actuates a valve with a spring that holds it either open or closed (don't remember which). pulse width modulation is a method of varying a DC voltage by chopping the voltage into on or off states. Generally speaking, a 50% duty cycle of a 12 volt DC signal will be 6 volts if you take the average of the voltage being 12 volts half the time and 0 volts the other half. A boost controller valve can send this PWM signal to the solenoid to counteract the spring in the valve, so that it can vary how open (or closed) the valve is, and thus controlling how much of the pressure signal is bled off before it gets to your turbo wastegates.
