Although its *possible* the intake cam gears are fine, its completely unlikely. VTC wear is a common issue with Z32 owners. Most common band aid is JWT high pressure springs, actual fix is replacing the gears (with known good or BDE gears). Your VTC solenoid may also be broken, but the frog rattle is coming from the worn VTC system in the intake cam gears. And yes, it can be done in the car fairly easily (although it is labor intensive)
