I just got the motor back in my 90 TT... Replaced: injectors, seals, gaskets, removed precats/cats, egr, water bypass, prvr, aivs, carbon canister. I did all the 120k maintenance. When I got it started and put a timing light on it and began to dial in 15 deg. the car bogs and lifters begin to rattle on the pass. side until I get it to around 20 deg then smooths out and runs fine. The car is warmed up and I am positive I am getting a good connection on the #1 cyl. I used the plug wire expansion method. Car is currently idling around 1200rpms. My question is would this cause it to read at 20deg when it is likely closer to 15? I have been reading about it and assume the ecu advances the timing as the car revs above 750rpms? Thanks guy's sorry for the long post!
