Since I hate searching for threads and finding ones without conclusions, here is mine so far: Finally got the timing belt off, and it was 1 off at the crankshaft. Counting teeth was critical as I couldn't get the mark to definitively line up at the crank, which is what lead to the problem. This resolved all the power issues, and the car is finally running great. Haven't had a chance yet to re-test compression, which I will do some day soon. Someone on another thread had the same tester and said the extension tube was the problem. He said he was able to get it threaded onto the spark plug holes without it, so I will try that.
