Message But I have always heard that you break in the cams (yeah I work on old cars, so this doesn't have to be done for the Z), change the oil, then do around town driving for ~500 miles.

The rings need acceleration (pressure) to force against the wall and "file" themselves to the cylinder shape, then vacuum (deceleration) to clear away the metal debris (which is minimal).

That's why around town driving works best.

Also, did you use conventional oil? as Synthetic will prevent the friction that lets the rings seal to the cylinder walls.

And lastly...


12. 700-900 mi, Started pushing up to boost limit @ 6 PSI. In general was running well, with a couple more troubleshooting things tackled.
13. 900 mi did timing belt and other various work. Starts weird behavior

That should signal something to you immediately. What are 'various works', and is there a chance the timing was set incorrectly?
