:As far as the balance tube being off being adequate, I have always been told that the throttle MUST be propped open to get an accurate test. The difference of volume between the much smaller holes in the plenum and what the throttle bodies will allow the motor to draw seems like it would be pretty significant.
I've tried it both ways with the throttle open and closed with the balance tube removed and saw no difference in the compression results
