Message Hey there...

this question goes out to the gurus (BDE, EPRacing, Ash, SpecialtyZ)

I just put my motor back together, and the block was decked .010, and the heads .005. This had me really puzzled when I put the motor back together as I could not get a proper gap on the timing belt tensioner, and ended up having to grind the slots out to get a proper gap.

Then when observing the timing marks on the cams vs the crank, at 0* on the crank, it appears that the cams are retarded by a half a tooth from where they were previously with the other heads and block. I also didn't have the problem with the tensioner gap with un-decked heads and block.

So after some reading, I now understand that decking the heads and block is going to retard the cam timing.

Not knowing the pitch of the teeth on the gears, or the exact circumference by virtue of that, I am not sure how to figure how much, approximately, that this is throwing the cam timing off. I also assume that the only way to correct this is to get adjustable cam gears.

Can someone tell me how to figure this out? Thanks.
