| I just picked up a 94 5spd TT last week. 75k miles. Took it to a nissan dealer to have them look it over. Mentioned I wasn't hitting full 9.5 boost (according to the stock gauge) it only goes up to a little after the first mark on the + side. I think the mechanic thought it was suppose to go up to +14... I requested them to check for boost leaks, they didnt. Pretty sure some hoses need to be replaced cause the intake in the plenum is frayed and has visible crack behind the metal ring. The mechanic test drove it and came back and said the turbos (didn't specify if both or one) is leaking "into the exhaust and that the turbo bearings are bad." They also thought you had to drop the tank to replace a fuel sending unit and this mechanic was supposedly the only one qualified to work on Z's :P I have a nasty leak at the rear end of the tranny that im trying to figure out in another thread. The oil/tranny fluid is running down from the top rear end of the tranny and all over the exhaust pipes and smokes like hell when I push the engine. Grandma driving, it doesn't smoke and doesn't drip. Looking down at the turbos from the engine bay everything is dry, no oil, and the pipes coming outta them are dry all the way past that first gasket in the exhaust pipes. The service writer said the mechanic mentioned "grinding" from the turbos which is weird cause the engine sounds great, real smooth in accel and deceleration. I cant really hear the turbos when i let the engine open up but I dont hear any "grinding." There is no smoke coming from the mufflers, its all clearly on the outside of the exhaust pipes around that tranny leak which I cant tell if its tranny fluid or engine oil? The previous owner had another nissan dealer look at the EGR as it was throwing a code, they didnt replace it instead just cleaned it and put it back on. It still threw a code once ina while. A day after I got it and let the engine really open up the "check engine light" never came back. The previous nissan dealer said revving the engine would clear out the carbon? There appeared to be a small spot of old burnt oil right behind where the EGR valve is, on the tranny and two hoses, that was smoking when I tested for full boost today. Stuck my finger in the only area it coulda came from and it was dry too. So with what I think might be low boost, and a mechanic saying bad turbo bearings and leaking into exhaust while the rear of the tranny leaks all over the pipes n smokes its got me all worried. But the engine does sound great. Anyone have any ideas if the turbos could actually be leaking or a test, things to inspect? I love my Z so much, there is a DIY garage here im gonna rent some space to have a lift to work on.
