to start it? The facts that it takes a while to start, and you smell raw fuel, indicate that it's likely leaking fuel (and thus losing pressure when it sits). If it was flooded before you tried to start it, it would blow plumes of smoke at start up, something you did not describe. .... Given the danger, I'd be checking for fuel leaks. It doesn't take long, and safety is a good thing. This is easy compared to pulling and testing injectors.
