Subject	CAS tab broken?

Message	So if anyone has read my previous posts, i have a 90 TT that has experienced loss of power and hesitation once at normal operating temp. Trouble shooting today, my buddy removed the cas to check if it was functioning properly following a guideline he was reading In a forum. He reinstalled it once we said it was fine or thought to be and the car would no longer start. Under further looking we removed it once more and we saw the tab was hanging at an angle, it was snapped off of the spline. Along with we saw a redish residue on the broken tab and a little around the actual spline. My question is, is it possible that the tab was already broken under stress or is it something we caused by possibly installing it incorrectly. What are the steps for removing the spline? Also anymore info would be appreciate related to this subject, thanks
