Message It does NOT automatically come on when the AC is engaged.

It is for cooling the engine coolant not the refrigerant.

It works mainly off the engine coolant temperature, and
under 192F it should never be on.

From the Service Manual:
The ECM controls the radiator (auxillary)fan Operation
corresponding to VEHICLE SPEED, engine coolent tempature,
and air conditioner ON signal.
{non-turbocharged model)
Air conditioner switch is "off"
Engine coolent temperture....................Radiator fan
.......below 219....................................off
.......Above 221...................................on
Air conditioner switch is "on"
Vehicle speed ...Engine coolent tempature....Radiator fan
Below 24..................below 201....................off
...........................above
201.......................on

Above 25 ...............below 219...............off
........................above 221...............on

(Turbocharged model)

Air conditioner switch is "off"
Engine coolent temperture....................Radiator fan
.......below 219.................................off
.......Above 221.................................on

Air conditioner switch is "on"
Vehicle speed ...Engine coolent tempature....Radiator fan
