Message The old bulbs and housings were way too dim and I wanted to replace with a brighter LED bulb. Since the LEDs would not fit the OEM housings, new ones were needed.

First the old housings were removed. They are attached by phillips head screw on the lower edge of the dash panel. On the DS, the knee panel must be removed; and on the PS, the finisher plate and the glovebox need to come out. Here are the OEM units.

A new connector for the 6-SMD bulb was sourced.

For the housing a translucent 35mm film canister was used. It gives off a nice glow, w/o any hot spots. A dremel was used to cut out the 0.50" hole and notch the sides for fitment to the LED twist socket.

The new LED socket fits snugly into the film canister. Bulb replacement is similar to OEM, twist and remove.

Rivets hold the canister to the old lamp mounting bracket

This is the finished assembly. The white OEM connector plugs directly into the wiring harness connector.

The brackets on both sides use the original mounting hardware in the same position under the dash. Because the film canister is larger than the OEM lamp assemblies, the mounting brackets were bent upwards in order to place the unit out of sight under the dash

The light now is much brighter. Probably two or three times the original bulb intensity.
