| You are correct that the VTC solenoids are behind the camshaft at the rear of the engine but the noise usually lies in the VTC sprockets a the front of the engine. This is a well documented problem and the fix is BDE VTC sprockets. To the OP: I would suggest you try the Rotella T6 5w40, I have been very happy with it. You really want a lighter oil at cold temperatures, the 5w of the rotella will work well for you. Thick oil does not flow as well at colder temperatures and can cause the lifters to be noisy until they fill with oil. Other than this you can try using some atf just before you do your next oil change to try and clean out the lifters. Google has plenty of info on this. What I would do is go for a nice long drive, after sitting these engines can develop a few noises which seem to smooth out after a bit. Your engine noise is nothing to worry about, sounds like lifter tick to me.
