Message	sucks. Maybe if you get a carbide tungsten drill bit you can drill an appropriate sized hole and then use a extractor bit and reverse it out of there. May need to use a punch on the dowel before drilling otherwise the drill will dance all over and it will be hard to drill down the center. Good luck!
