You will not notice the difference between 0.035 and 0.040 at idle, you should not anyways. Decreasing the plug gap is to cure a misfire/stumbling at high rpm caused by spark blow out when the boost is raised. You probably have another issue, unless you messed up the plugs while gapping them. You can't go at this wildly, you need to be careful about the delicate electrode. You can ruin a platinum/iridium plug by touching the tip with an instrument. You never pry against it. Do the 6P's first, then inspect plugs for damage.
