I was a Autoglass tech for 10 years with Safelite Autoglass. I can shed a little light on this for you. The reason we dont have the old gasket set windows is because the Fed. Government determined them to be unsafe and mandated that the automakers quite using them in the early 80's. The windshield on a unibody car is structural therefore must be bonded to the car.The sawzall looking tool is called an Extractor and is a great tool. Once you get used to using it, a windshield can be removed with very minimal damage to the pinchweld. You just insert it deep enough to cut without riding along the body. As for the removal of the old urethane goes, that is also mandatory. I used to use a tool with a razor blade in it to cut it down. You never fully remove the factory urethane, but cut it down as thin as possible as it is bonded the best by the manufacturer, unless of course it peels up easily. If it is not bonded good from the factory, then we peel it up and use a special "activator" to condition the paint or primer to accept our primer. We then black primer all un urethaned surfaces as well as all scratches. If there is rust from a previous "hacker" we would grind as much of it out as possible then activate it and primer it to stop further rusting. Then we apply the new urethane and install the new glass. When I was doing glass work, Safelite had the best trained and stricktest guidelines for our techs. most other Companies just hired anyone and trained them for a week and released them to do damage to cars! We not only trained for many weeks, but had to pass tests and becomes certified, as well as re-test every year. When I quit the company we were just starting to use this wire cutting tool. Check with Safelite to see if they are still using it. Sorry for bieng long winded...Lol
