Message The springs aren't under that much tension, it won't go flying. You need a valve spring compressor, or the tool I know of is sold by snap-on. It has a metallic end that looks like a ballpoint pen which holds the collets in place and you put force onto the tool and it compresses the spring while the collets go into place.

JWT just released a spring compression tool also.

Most other valve spring tools are too bulky for the tiny pockets our springs sit inside.
