I'm assuming we're discussing new style injectors. The pintle cap snaps on after the small oring, then the lip of that cap holds it in place and sits on the inside of the rail, holding the pintle cap and ultimately the small oring in place. If there's any doubt about the pintle cap condition, replace it with a good one. It needs to have the full lip intact to function properly.
