Message They are made in China lol..... The main problem they suffer from to my knowledge is balance, they are usually just slapped together and they DO work but they are terrible because they aren't balanced at all so they fail rather quickly, they also last longer if you match them with the correct oil feed restrictor, I believe the reason for this is they don't have any kind of restrictor built in so the oil comes in at full pressure and blows the seals faster. I have no first hand experience and have no intention to....
My advice for turbo selection.... at the lowest get good condition stock used turbos. That means no rebuilds unless it is from a reputable shop with a decent warranty/replacement policy.

Vacuum lines..... not a big deal especially if you simplify things by deleting egr, carbon canister, P.R.V.R.

I don't know if you knew this yet but just in case.... you cannot turbo your current motor unless you rebuild it with lower compression pistons or have a VERY good tuner tune it for you (i.e. Ash) and run very low boost.

*disclaimer*: all that I say may be true or I may be completely wrong and I accept that.... please, it is your duty as another person on the internet to in-politely tell me how wrong I am :)
