Message that's what happened to me shortly after I tightened my belt a little too tight (and it was a brand new water pump) if the ribs on the belt are looking a little thin or dried/cracked you should just change the belt, the belt relies on a mixture of tension and surface area (rib width) to sustain traction on the pulleys.

*disclaimer*: all that I say may be true or I may be completely wrong and I accept that.... please, it is your duty as another person on the internet to in-politely tell me how wrong I am :)
