Message of engine), the car's ECU programming and the most expensive part - the specially made CAM sprockets that had complicated internal machining to allow it to be variable. Main issue was cost cutting as I understand it....

This issue could be as simple as someone did a CAM seal replace and was careless in fastening down those bolts when re-installing the CAM gear. Over time, due to spinning, things came loose...

PS -- There's a pretty good chance the timing belt will need to be replaced, if not at least completely cleaned. Since you've got everything apart - really not that big of a deal to do workwise. Main concern is how oil soaked the belt got...
